Jaladhara literally means- is full of water and it looks exactly like this. It is a sugar made from gram and sugar, whose roots contain rose water. For a day or two, it is kept inside the water, for drying. About 100 years back, about the exiled Suryakumar Modak.
It is a matter of time that Sun Kumar Modak was asked to make some new sweets for the new groom of the local landlord. He got ready to do this and after several experiments, he invented the famous Jalbhara Sandesh. Nobel laureate Rabindra Nath Tagore used to visit Chandanagar often and he was an enthusiastic fan. Waterlogged Mahatma Gandhi, Rashbihari Bose, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, among others, also appreciated this feature of Chandanagar.
